NHRA Top Fuel Dragster Driver
(March 1, 2022): Will Smith will be back in the driver’s seat this weekend at the NHRA Division 2 Lucas Oil Regional race, better known as the “Baby Gators” leading up to the Gatornationals. Smith will be driving the Samsel’s Racing A/Fuel dragster, competing in the Top Alcohol Dragster class in Gainesville, Florida.
“My goal remains to jump in a Top Fuel dragster this season, but the opportunity arose for me drive for the Samsel family and I jumped at the opportunity,” said Smith. “The Samsel family is amazing to work with. We’ve become friends over the past few years. I helped out the team as a crew member last weekend in Belle Rose.”
The “Baby Gators” is a long-standing race for sportsman racers. Many competitors stay and compete at the NHRA Gatornationals the following weekend. For Smith, he will only be driving at the Baby Gators.
“Robin (Samsel) will be back behind-the-wheel for the Gatornationals.”
Smith has spent the last four seasons driving for Hirata Motorsports. He won the Corn Belt Classic in Earlville, IA and raced in the JEGS All-Stars in 2020. Smith is also the Marketing Director of the PDRA series.
Riding on board with Will this weekend will be his sponsors TeaCo Geophysical and Frederick Line-X, along with Samsel’s Racing sponsors: Lucas Oil, NGK, Goodson Tools & Supplies, Lapel Truck & Trailer, Justice Brothers and Nelson Trucking.
(February 24, 2022): Will Smith Motorsports, a well-oiled machine of massive marketing brilliance and proven aptitude behind the wheel, has refocused efforts for 2022. Following a three year stint in Top Alcohol Dragster, Smith is now putting all his energy into securing a Top Fuel program.
Smith’s never been shy about his goal to pilot a Top Fuel Dragster, and he’s also never been closer to achieving that goal. In order to put all his efforts behind moving into the sport’s quickest and fastest class, Smith made the difficult decision to end his tenure in TAD.
“I had a wonderful TAD partnership, and we were able to accomplish a lot during our time. At this point, however, all my efforts are geared towards funding and piloting a Top Fuel ride. The branding opportunities I’m currently working on are a perfect fit for NHRA. As in all my marketing ventures, this must be a mutually beneficial relationship. I want it to be just as good for the sponsor and NHRA as it is for the team.”
Smith is currently preparing for licensing later this year, with plans of debuting later this year and working to move into a multi-year agreement for 2023 and beyond.
